As the present reporting period began the 1st Antitank Battalion (-) was preparing to deploy to Okinawa with other units of the 1st Marine Division (Rein) (Rear). The Battalion at that time was comprised of H&S Company and Company B (-). Prior to the beginning of the reporting period 2nd Platoon, Company B and 3rd Platoon, Company B were attached to BLT's 2/5 and 3/5 respectively. 1st Platoon, Company B had deployed to Kaneohe with BLT 1/5 in July, 1965. b. The organization for embarkation put this Battalion in Embarkation Unit Charlie, commanded by Col. C.F. WIDDECKE, Commanding Officer RLT-5. c. Lt Col W. MOORE, Commanding Officer, 1st Antitank Battalion was designated Commander, Embarkation Team Charlie-1. Embarkation Team Charlie-1 embarked aboard the USS Talladega (APA-208) and sailed from Long Beach on 14 January 1966, and CHOPPED to Commanding General, FMFPAC on the same date. 1 Enclosure (1) ___________________________________________________________________________ |

d. Capt J.E. FELKER, Commanding Officer, Company B (-), 1st Antitank Battalion was designated Commander, Embarkation Team Charlie - 3. Embarkation Team Charlie - 3 embarked aboard the USS St Clair County (LST-1096) sailed from San Diego on 14 January 1966, and CHOPPED to Commanding General, FMFPAC on the same date. e. While aboard the USS Talladega, the 1st Antitank Battalion Staff functioned as the Embarkation Team Charlie-1 Staff, coordinating all troop activity aboard that ship. Worth of note was the ambitious training program initiated and run under the direction of the AT Battalion S-3. This is discussed under Detailed Description of Significant Events. f. Embarkation Team Charlie-1 debarked at White Beach Okinawa on 5 February 1966 and CHOPPED to Commanding General 1st Marine Division (Rein). The Battalion was stationed at Camp Hansen. g. Embarkation Team Charlie-3 debarked at Naha on 14 February 1966 and CHOPPED to Commanding General, 1st Marine Division. Company B (-) rejoined the Battalion at Camp Hansen. h. Upon arrival of the 1st Antitank Battalion on Okinawa, Company A (-), 1st Antitank Battalion was rejoined ADCON & OPCON. Company A (-) was comprised of its headquarters and 3rd Platoon, Company A, 3rd Antitank Battalion. i. Capt G. R. VAN HORN relieved 1st Lt D. F. FEENEY as Company Commander, Company A (-) on 8 February 1966. 1st Lt FEENEY was assigned as Company A (-) Executive Officer. j. After arriving on Okinawa, the Battalion began a full-scale counter- guerilla warfare training program. All hands went through the Jungle Lane at Camp Schwab. Forty men participated in the one day Landmine Warfare, Demolitions and Boobytrap course run by the 1st Engineer Battalion on 10 February 1966. Fifteen Marines of this Battalion attened Counter- guerrilla Warfare School at the Northern Training Area 24 February - 28 February. Command Post Defense drills were held on the afternoon and evening of 28 February. 3. Detailed Discription of Significant Events a. Shipboard Training Training aboard the USS Talladega was conducted by all units of Embarkation Team Charlie - I. The program was initiated and coordinated by Major A.J. 5750 28 Feb 1966 The program was ambitious in concept and was successfully accomplished despite the many detriments to training aboard ship. Training was conducted in all available spaces and the calibre of instruction was of such a professional nature as to merit a "Well Done" to all concerned. On the morning of 15 January the heavy section escorted a convoy consisting of four (4) M-109's, eight (8) M-35's, and two (2) MRC-36's from the Chu Lai enclave to a position southwest of Bin Son (BS562894). WFS/pwt [MARKED OUT] 21 Jan 1966 16Jan66 the section escorted a resupply convoy to the Chu Lai enclave and returned to the artillery position the following afternoon. On 17 January the section remained in their security positions around the artillery bat- tery. On 18 January they escorted another convoy to Chu Lai and returned to the artillery position. Upon their return to the artillery position in- formation had been received ordering the battery back to Chu Lai. AT 1700 the entire convoy returned to Chu Lai completing our mission. c. The 3rd Platoon in support of 3/7 has been manning positions on the MLR at (BT525024) and (BT549016). A light section is positioned at each location. Each night, prior to sunset two Ontos along with a fire team, patrol around the dump and up and down route #1 to insure that all the local people are out of the area. d. Company Headquarters continues to man two (2) M-60 MG positions at (BT560048) in conjunction with the 7th Marines beach security plan. e. Statistics. (1) (6) Six convoy escort missions between the Chu Lai enclave & (BS562894) (2) Twenty (20) - 1 (one) Ontos patrols and ten (10) two (2) Ontos patrols (3) None (4) None (5) None (6) None 3. Training. a. Classes were conducted on interior guard, TET, personal relations with the local people, safety, field sanitation, proper maintenance of vehicle log-books, and proper PM procedures. Inspections were conducted in the following areas: serialized gear, small gear, small arms, OEM gear, living quarters, comm, and mortar transport. Continual OJT was conducted in all military occupational fields. Homemade strong-backs were constructed and the troop living area improved. .30 caliber MG's were fired from the beach at (BT560048). [MARKED OUT] WGS/jvp 1 Feb 1966 [MARKED OUT] c. The 3rd platoon in support of 3/7 has been manning positions on the MLR at (BT525024) and (BT549016) during the period 21 Jan to 23 Jan 1966. During this same period two Ontos were used to patrol the dump and route #1 each day prior to sunset. On 24 Jan 1966 the MLR was moved forward and now the platoon has a section at (BS549996) in support of L-3/7 and a section at (BT523001) in support of M-3/7. On 24 Jan 1966 two Ontos from the 3rd platoon escorted a convoy from the Chu Lai enclave to the military compound at Quang Ngai (BS650730). The convoy left at 0900 and returned at 1500 the same day. The convoy consisted of two (2) Ontos, six (6) fuel trucks, one (1) M-49 and three (3) radio jeeps. d. Company Headquarters continues to man two (2) M-60 M.G. positions at (BT560048) in conjunction with the 7th Marines beach security plan. One man has been provided for the composite platoon on the air field. e. Statistics. (1) One (1) convoy escort mission from Chu Lai to Quang Ngai. (2) Three (3) - two (2) Ontos patrols and Two (2) - one (1) Ontos patrols. (3) None (4) None (5) None (6) None 3. Training. a. Classes were conducted on interior guard, UCMJ, Ontos tactics, Ontos log book, proper PM procedures and teh M-72. A detailed inspection was conducted by a team from FLSU #1 in the following areaa: supply management, motor transport, comm, weapons and opticals, the Ontos, and general supply. FAM firing was conducted with the following weapons: .45 cal. pistol, M-14 rifle, M-60 M.G. and M-72(66mm rocket launcher). b.
